Why when I write the words vacation do I immediately hear   “The Go-Go’s?”

But it is that time of year!  Time for many to take that summer vacation.

And let’s be honest, vacations take A LOT of planning to accomplish.  From the lodging to travel to packing.  But add in the issue of special needs to the mix for many of us and that adds a whole new layer!

My daughter Elizabeth has special needs.  Specifically, global dyspraxia and sensory processing disorder ( SPD).  So simply put, these disorders affect everyday of her life.  We have learned over the years what it is we need to do to make  vacations successful.  It does take some extra thinking and planning but it is so very worth it. Once upon a time there was a big, overstuffed basket.  And next to it was a little girl, named Elizabeth.  Elizabeth did not like to see her Mom bring out the basket because when Mom brought it out, Elizabeth knew she would have to work.

Because in the basket, you see, were all the things that Mom was told Elizabeth needed to do and work on.  There was Theraputty in it, coloring books, thick crayons, special scissors as well as things for her mouth work, like whistles or a vibrating elephant.

Mom called  this time with the basket “Elizabeth’s work time”  and it meant that Elizabeth could not do anything else while working, just sitting with mom doing thing after thing. And truthfully, little Elizabeth really hated “work time.” Read the rest of this entry »
